SEO 101 - What Every Webmaster Should Know And Follow - Part 2
Posted in SEO, WebMaster by DB
Yesterday I talked about the various Onsite SEO techniques you can implement to optimize your website and help you in getting a better search engine ranking. Today’s post continues from where we left off yesterday and talks about the other bucket, “Offsite SEO techniques”. If you haven’t read part 1 yet then do read it first before you continue with this post.
Offsite SEO is all about building links and in turn authority. Back links pretty much is the key factor in deciding “Page Rank” for a website and if done in the right manner will build authority as well for your site.
Key points to bear in mind when building back links, in no particular order are
- Avoid Site wide links. That said, site wide links such as your Blog roll, “designed by” or “hosted by” type of links are generally ok.
- Use your anchor text wisely. Do not use the same anchor text for all your links. You would have trouble explaining incoming links having the exact same anchor text from many different sources.
- Your back links must be a mix of high and low PR sites. A lot high PR incoming links and you can bet these will be categorized as paid links.
- Be patient, acquire your links over time. Do not for example submit your website to a 1000 directories at once. ( Beeeep!! “Red Flag” )
- Strive to get relevant back links. While any back link will help, relevant links build authority and help you in your search rankings. Remember its not only about getting your website PR up but also about ranking better for your keywords.
- Deep linking or linking to inner pages on your site is very important. This will help in building rank and authority for your inner pages and you can pass it on amongst your other pages if your internal linking structure is well defined.
- Link exchanges are ok if you keep them to a bare minimum and on topic.
- Using “dofollow” blog comments and other similar sources all count to building rank but very little to authority.
My previous post on building links might also be of interest.
Both Onsite and Offsite SEO techniques if used together and implemented wisely and patiently will yield results that will take you far in the SERP’s for your keyword of choice. Unfortunately very few actually bother and even fewer do it with patience.
